Valerie Muehleman (Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton Comprehensive Health)Just In Case You Ever Wondered
Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive
Awarded: $74,000

In South Carolina, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. Based on 1996 to 1998 data, Beaufort County had the second highest breast cancer rate among the state's 46 counties. "Just in Case you ever wonder" will consist of community outreach education and direct subsidy of mammograms for women in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton Counties targeting African American and Hispanic Women. An estimated 18 percent of Lowcountry women, who would benefit from mammography, some 4,000 women, are uninsured or have inadequate insurance coverage. Since April 2004, Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc's Radiology Department did 31 mammograms on women ages 35 to 39 and three were recommended for ultrasound follow-up. Women, usually this young, are experiencing a problem if they are seeking assistance. African-American women are twice as likely to die of cancer as are white women after diagnosis. The Hispanic population is steadily growing and many of these women do not qualify for Medicare. The goal of the program is to provide community outreach education, direct subsidy of clinical breast exams and mammograms for women aged 35 and older who live at or below 200 percent of poverty and additional diagnostic tests.

Margie Maxwell (Volunteers in Medicine)Volunteers in Medicine
Volunteers in Medicine
Awarded: $64,565

Volunteers in Medicine was started in 1994 by founder Dr. Jack McConnell with the goal of providing healthcare to those citizens of Hilton Head who were having difficulty obtaining even basic health care services. These residents are often described as the "working poor" of the community working for hourly wages with no benefits- not old enough for Medicare and not poor enough for Medicaid. They are effectively shut out of the health care system. VIM is staffed by over 450 (mostly) retired volunteer physicians, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professional. As of July 2006, the local breast education program, Women's Health Matters disbanded on Hilton Head. VIM has taken Responsibility for this program to provide mammography for the medically underserved patients in Beaufort County who do not qualify for a mammogram under the Best Chance Program. VIM currently provides GYN exams, PAP smears and clinical breast exams to eligible patients free of charge. Our goal is to further enhance this program with access to mammograms and breast health education for our patients.

Debbie Bryant (Hollings Cancer Center)Hollings Cancer Center
Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC
Awarded: $33,200

The purpose of this project is to increase early detection of breast cancer by providing a three step approach to annual breast cancer re-screening among medically underserved women in targeted counties. This will be accomplished by 1) developing a reminder system to annually recall women to return for clinical breast exams (CBE) and mammography, 2) providing navigation service to women who do not respond to re-screening reminder, and 3) providing individualized breast self exams (BSE) training.

Loretta Hume (Charleston Breast Center)Charleston Breast Center
Charleston Breast Center
Awarded: $22,326

The Charleston Breast Center (CBC) was founded on the commitment to provide outreach and education to women throughout the Lowcountry and coastal communities. The CBC is a not-for-profit, community-based, medical facility, that provides expedited breast health care services. The mission of the Charleston Breast Center is to bridge state-of-the-art breast cancer detection and treatment with education and compassionate comprehensive care. In South Carolina, African American women have a 32% higher death rate from breast cancer compared to women who are white. The number of breast cancer deaths can be reduced substantially if detected early through education, outreach, and screening programs. In response to this health crisis, the CBC last year was awarded a pilot grant from the Komen Foundation to establish the First Witness Project ® (WP) in South Carolina. This generous grant allowed the CBC to start this program. Training and recruitment of volunteers was completed in the summer and now active education presentations are behind held in the community.
